HOW ARE YOUR KIDS COPING?

During times of uncertainty, and following a crisis, children and teenagers (and even parents) can feel anxious or distressed. Sometimes there are emotional and behaviour problems that start to emerge later, even if the child “seemed fine” initially. Emotional resilience helps kids overcome these kinds of challenges, and helps whole communities recover.

SUPPORTING EMOTIONAL WELLBEING

There are plenty of ways parents and carers can positively support emotional wellbeing and coping skills. This also helps build resilience right across regions and communities. The right environment helps children and teenagers to:

  • Understand their emotions
  • See adults as positive examples of how to deal with strong emotions and anxiety
  • Be able to think realistically rather than “imagining the worst”

Parents and carers can also help by:

  • Responding to behaviour issues in a calm and consistent way
  • Helping support their child’s resilience and problem-solving skills

It really helps to get some tips and ideas from a proven program – and to be able to choose for yourself what ideas you’d like to try at home.

To support families severely affected by natural disasters in the Shires of Alpine, East Gippsland, Mansfield, Towong, Wangaratta and Wellington, a range of Triple P support is available – FREE!

This is fully funded as a public health initiative by the Victorian Government. Many organisations including charities, health centres, schools and local and state governments across the world provide FREE access to Triple P. They do this because it’s one of the world’s most researched parenting programs. It’s also very flexible and respectful of cultural differences and each family’s unique values. Another reason is because evidence shows that investing in the future health and happiness of our children and teenagers benefits the whole community. So yes, it really is FREE. And it’s also totally up to you what you take from it.

We acknowledge the traditional custodians of the land on which we live and work, and pay our respects to elders past, present, and emerging.

We’re partnering with a number of local communities and organisations to deliver these services. Whether you attend a seminar as a virtual or in-person event, you’ll probably find it’s hosted at a local school, health organisation, or community organisation, and presented by Darron Crocker (see image). Darron lives with his family on Gunaikurnai country at Lakes Entrance and delivers Triple P programs across a number of regions across the state of Victoria. He is completing his Honours in Psychology and has worked for many years in supporting people’s learning and development from a wide variety of ages and backgrounds.

Triple P is one of the few parenting programs in the world with evidence to show it works. There are literally hundreds of trials and studies to show Triple P works for most families, in many different cultures, and in many different family situations. Triple P Online is also the first online parenting program proven to work.

Each module of the Triple P Online Course only takes about 30 minutes to an hour. You don’t need to do it all in one block, either. Some parents prefer to just do ten or fifteen minutes a day. There are 8 modules in Triple P Online, 6 in Teen Triple P Online. The Fear-Less Triple P Online course also has 6 modules. There’s also an extra Parenting During Uncertain Times module in each, to help with issues related to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Triple P Online for Baby program has 7 modules. So whichever program you choose, if you start today and do one or two modules each week, you’ll be finished in about a month! Of course, it’s totally up to you. If you want to take it more slowly, take a break, or go back and revisit a previous module, that’s all fine too.

Triple P International takes your privacy and data protection very seriously. We have rigorous IT security systems and procedures. We don’t share your information with any third-party marketing organisations or unauthorised personnel. Your email address and region are visible to our administration team. Your progress may be visible to a system administrator in case you need to change your email address. All other family information within the program is anonymised. If you’d like more information, please review our privacy policy.

You might like to do Teen Triple P Online. This course is for parents of pre-teens and teens (10-16 years). There are six modules, covering all of the Teen Triple P strategies. Each module usually takes between 30 minutes to an hour, and includes a fun mix of videos, worksheets, tips and activities. You can also sign up for text message reminders.

It depends a bit on which issues you’d like to focus on most. There’s not a hard and fast rule or an exact age at which children develop, so we suggest taking a look at each course to help you decide. You can always do both!

The Fear-Less Triple P Online program, which helps you support your child manage anxiety and become more emotionally resilient, is designed for parents of 6- to 14-year-olds.

It is great if both parents can do the course, but it’s not essential. Triple P is used very successfully by single parents. When both parents, or a parent and another carer, both do the course it helps them work as a team to make changes. This includes grandparents, foster parents, and other family members, and even ex-partners, if they also care for your children. It makes it easier to communicate better about parenting, argue and disagree less, and support each other more. . If you’re doing an online course, and want both parents to have their own workbook and certificate, you need to register two access codes.

One of the great things about Triple P is that it’s not about telling you what to do in every situation. It’s about helping you feel confident that you can work out what to do. This will be based on what you learn about child or teen development and the strategies you’ve picked up, and your ability to review and refine. So if your question’s about parenting, we suggest you go ahead and do a Triple P program! If it’s about something else to do with Triple P, you may want to try contacting Darron Crocker using the contact form on this page.
